Many factors converged to insist that I write about “Kinky Hypocrite” this week: my recent visit to the Bible Belt, the death of “Lady G,” and what a flawed disappointment Graham Platner turned out to be.

I was in Maine when I wrote the essay about “What It Means,” and I couldn’t figure out what to say about the lyric “our heroes may be rapists who watch us while we dream.” I thought, maybe “rapists” stands in for colonizers. Then the Platner allegations hit, and I was reminded how many of our “heroes” are just rapists and creeps.

While “What It Means” is a quiet and devastating protest song, “Kinky Hypocrite” gleefully establishes DBT as the “dance band of the resistance.” Like “Shit Shots Count,” Mike Cooley’s “Kinky Hypocrite” is a crude, funny, and raucous romp with a seething takedown tucked inside. I dare you to listen to this song while standing still.
